The Reason

Chapter 5
The Reason

As she walked towards the front door, Kate wondered why she kept on doing this. Yesterday was a nightmare. She cried herself to sleep last night. At first, this was just for the money, but now it was so much more. No longer was the money a reason. She had enough saved to pay off her bills so she did not need to continue. Still she did. Why?

Walking in, she went into the room where he sat. He did not acknowledge her presence. It felt like she was not in the room with him. Her heart broke again. Each day began the same way and ended the same way. She decided to sit opposite him and let him continue with what he was doing. Oh, how she loved him. It broke her heart every time she left him and went home. But she knew she couldn’t stay. She had her own life to live.

Lost in her thoughts she didn’t notice that he had turned his attention to her. He called at her the only way he knew how, but she did not respond. He called again. Still she did not respond. So he did the one thing he felt would get her attention.

He spat at her.

Shocked Kate turned and looked at him. Then she remembered the instructions she had been following with him for the past year. She got up, avoided eye contact and took up a wipe. Gently she wiped herself and then walked up to him and wiped his mouth. She looked at what he was doing and saw the painting he was making. She wanted to tell him she was sorry. She had not intentionally ignored him, that the finger painting was beautiful. However, if she did that, it would mean she was condoning his behavior.

It was so hard. Deciding which to follow; the instructions of the doctor or the tugging’s of her heart. She knew what she had to do. She ignored him and went about looking for another alternative to redirect his attention. She had to stay neutral, less he feeds off her reaction.
Immediately she turned from him, he started pinching her. He wanted her attention now and she wasn’t giving him. She knew he was acting out in frustration. Therefore, she did what the doctor had told her. In a calm, monotonous voice devoid of any emotion, she said;

“Tony hands down. No pinching.”

He stopped immediately and looked directly into her eyes.

Kate wanted to hug him and tell him she understood why he was agitated. However, she could not; for to do so will go against all that they were trying to teach him. Consistency was the key otherwise; he would start getting mixed message. Picking up a lollipop from the table, she opened it and gave to him. He gulped it in delight forgetting completely the reason he had thrown a fit a few seconds earlier.

And so the day began for both of them; the nanny and her ward. As the hours progressed, each one filled with trials and triumphs, Kate reveled in the beauty of the child’s innocence and gained strength from the joy she saw in his eyes every time he got something right and communicated his requests without throwing tantrums.

Finally, his mother came back from work and it was time for her to leave. She bent down to buckle her sandals. He ran up to her and placed a wet, sloppy kiss on her cheeks, then ran back to his mother to seek her attention.

Kate smiled as his mother whispered the words ‘thank you’ to her. His mother then held Tony’s hands; the hands of her non-verbal, five years old autistic son and walked into the kitchen.

This was it. The ritual he did each day when she was about to leave was the reason she had not stopped. His appreciation and love shown the only way he knew how to. His kiss.

At day’s end, when her body ached and she relaxed for a night rest, Kate remembered why she went back each day, a child’s love.

The Beginning

Chapter 2
The Beginning

Her physical beauty drew men to her. As I drove home, closing late from church I realized this was the second time I have seen her. I drove back to the point where she stood. My heart raced. This would be the first time I have ever ministered outside the confines of the church. I turned back to leave but the Spirit of God pulled me back.

Bracing myself, I walked up to her. So self-conscious was I that my steps were wobbly. She stopped walking when she noticed me. She stared at me with eyes drawn together.

“You are beautiful,” I said. It was all I could think of to say. I was out of my comfort zone and I couldn’t find the right words to say.

She laughed and replied, “I know.”

“There is someone I would like you to meet.”

After a pause, she said,

“I charge Two Thousand Naira per hour. I work for six hours.”

Without thinking, I replied. “I will pay.”

She walked with me to my car and I drove off to the children’s park close by. Although it was late, it was well lit. A security post was stationed nearby. We sat down on a bench. Silently I prayed for wisdom.

“So, who is this person I am to meet?” she asked with a frown.

I pulled out my bible and said,
“His name is Jesus.”

“You can’t be serious. Are you one of those religious fanatics?” she asked with a frown.

Smiling I said, “I am a fanatic for Jesus.”

“Yeah right. I should leave.” She got up to walk away.

“Why are you leaving? I agreed to pay you, did I not?”

When she nodded her head albeit reluctantly, I continued,

“Then why are you leaving?” I asked her again…………….

A Man died…

A man died…

When he realized it, he saw God coming closer with a suitcase in his hand.

Dialog between God and Dead Man:

God: Alright son, it’s time to go

Man: So soon? I had a lot of plans…

God: I am sorry but, it’s time to go

Man: What do you have in that suitcase?

God: Your belongings

Man: My belongings? You mean my things… Clothes… money…

God: Those things were never yours, they belong to the Earth

Man: Is it my memories?

God: No. They belong to Time

Man: Is it my talent?

God: No. They belong to Circumstance

Man: Is it my friends and family?

God: No son. They belong to the Path you travelled

Man: Is it my wife and children?

God: No. they belong to your Heart

Man: Then it must be my body

God: No No… It belongs to Dust

Man: Then surely it must be my Soul!

God: You are sadly mistaken son. Your Soul belongs to me.

Man with tears in his eyes and full of fear took the suitcase from the God’s hand and opened it…

With heartbroken and tears down his cheek he asks God…

Man: I never owned anything?

God: That’s Right. You never owned anything.

Man: Then? What was mine?

God: your MOMENTS.
Every moment you lived was yours.

Let This Be The Night

The temple gate opens,
My heart embraces the restorative power of the first rains of Your grace,
My tears flow without ceasing – not from pain but from joy,
I realize that in You is where I must be.
Into my heart Your word enters,
Darkness within me is dispelled and light is brought forth,
I cast myself down at Your feet.
As I seek Your presence and restoring grace,
My soul cries out – Let this be the night oh Lord! Let this be the night.

The loneliness within me is ousted,
Rancor is replaced with love,
The malice that consumes me becomes kindness,
I praise and adore You from the depths of my heart.
As I marvel in awe at Your awesome might,
My soul cries out- Let this be the night oh Lord! Let this be the night.

I realize that You are bigger than what people say,
I acknowledge You in all my ways,
My fear about tomorrow is expelled,
And hope is renewed within me.
I see the road before me as a path towards my beginning,
I see You in the loses I have and will receive,
I know that my weeping will only endure a while.
As I realize that my joy is near,
My soul cries out – Let this be the night oh Lord! Let this be the night.

I seek only to trust You – relying not on my understanding,
But on the wisdom that comes from the One who created the heavens and the earth,
I am no longer consumed with hate,
Vengeance is replaced with forgiveness,
I am moved from this valley of despair to a mountain top of peace.
As I realize that it is the peace only You can give,
My soul cries out – Let this be the night oh Lord! Let this be the night.

I will tarry from midnight to the break of dawn,
I wait upon You oh Lord,
For there is no path I wish to take – except to walk in Your loving presence.
I seek solace and redemption – for no more can I go on.
As I stand still and look up to the heavens,
My soul cries out words that my heart conceives,
“Only You Lord can save me. Let this be the night oh Lord I surrender all! Let this be the night.”

Ooh Child, Forgive..

Have you ever said to someone who offends or hurts you, “There is no way I am going to forgive you for what you did.” or maybe “I forgive you but i just can’t forget what you did.”

There are so many times I have been hurt by those I love and even mere acquaintances that I know how difficult it is to forgive the person and let go of all the pains and bad memories. The fact remains that as a Christian it is one of the things I must learn to embrace and do.

Based on my first post expressions of true christian spirituality, I am going to write on the next form of expression- Forgiveness.

“forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us….”

A portion of the Lord’s prayer we all struggle to embrace. But we have to. We must. It is part of who we are as Christians. I know how difficult it is to forgive and forget. I know because I have been hurt so many times by those I love and trust. sometimes, I feel there is just no way I can let go of the pain and even if I could I would not be able to forget the bad memories. Days and months pass and I realize that I have let go of the hurt and memories.

How was I able to do it?
Simple, I asked for help from the Holy Spirit and also confronted those who hurt me.

There is a saying, “It is better to debate a problem without settling it than to settle a problem without a debate.”

Talking to the person who has hurt you in instances where you can reach the person is a therapeutic way of confronting your hurt. It allows you the opportunity to let go of anger and resentment.

Another way is to just look forward to the next day. Look forward to the future and see beyond the pain however difficult it may seem at that moment. I achieve this by simply listening to songs that minister to the pain. There are many out there if you search and I find that they take me to a place far away from my anger and pain to the point I just forget.

Here is one of such songs,

Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna get easier
Ooh-oo child
Things’ll get brighter
Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna get easier
Ooh-oo child
Things’ll get brighter
Some day, yeah
We’ll get it together and we’ll get it all done
Some day
When your head is much lighter
Some day, yeah
We’ll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun
Some day
When the world is much brighter
Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna be easier
Ooh-oo child
Things’ll get be brighter
Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna be easier
Ooh-oo child
Things’ll get be brighter
Some day, yeah
We’ll get it together and we’ll get it all done
Some day
When your head is much lighter
Some day, yeah
We’ll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun
Some day
When the world is much brighter
Some day, yeah
We’ll get it together and we’ll get it all done
Some day
When your head is much lighter
Some day, yeah
We’ll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun
Some day
When the world is much brighter
Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna get easier
Ooh-oo child
Things’ll get brighter
Ooh-oo child
Things are gonna get easier
Ooh-oo child
Things’ll get brighter
Right now, right now

Remember, forgiveness is a gradual healing process and with time and God’s grace you will find yourself free of its hold and limitations.

Expressions of True Christian Spirituality

Over the next series of post, I want to share some of the things I learnt a few months back on true Christian Spirituality. I hope they inspire you just as they did me.

Simply defined, Spirituality is the quality or state of being concerned with religion or religious matters.

Christian Spirituality is the life-long journey through which a person comes to discover Self in relationship to God and to God’s creation i.e. family, the Christian community, humanity, and the world.(Timothy W. Brock)

One of such expressions of true Christian Spirituality is LOVE

Love is a language everyone understands. Every race, tribe and tongue understands the language of love. As a Christian, it is what makes us unique, our ability to love without limits. Our ability to look at the cross and see the greatest expression of love and then apply that love in our day-to-day lives. From our homes, to the streets to our offices to the church, each place offers an opportunity for us to show and express what Christianity is to us. Let us face it. Christianity is all about love. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son..John 3:16”. It is the reason we are who we are. It is the reason we are called Christians.

I will leave you with some quotes by one person who in her lifetime personified this expression of true Christianity, Mother Teresa.

“Love is a fruit in season at all times,
and within reach of every hand.

There is a terrible hunger for love.
We all experience that in our lives – the pain, the loneliness.
We must have the courage to recognize it.
The poor you may have right in your own family.
Find them.
Love them.

Speak tenderly to them.
Let there be kindness in your face, in your eyes, in your smile, in the warmth of your greeting.
Always have a cheerful smile.
Don’t only give your care, but give your heart as well.

I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts,
there can be no more hurt, only more love.

I pray that you will understand the words of Jesus,
“Love one another as I have loved you.”
Ask yourself “How has he loved me?
Do I really love others in the same way?”
Unless this love is among us, we can kill ourselves with work and it will only be work, not love.
Work without love is slavery.

– Mother Teresa

A Loud Cry

The land of fragrance was in a flurry of activity. The loud voices of men filled the air as I sat down and waited in anticipation. In awe, I listened with rapt attention, absorbing all that was said about Him. They could not stop talking. Excitement filled their voices. Could this be? Was He truly passing by? I asked myself.

The stories the men told of Him were extraordinary. I have heard the stories and many more before. But as they spoke today, I believed. Sighing heavily I reminisced in anguish. This is my only chance. I cannot afford to miss this opportunity. I am tired of living this way; tired of living each day at the mercy of others. With great determination, I continued sitting down, waiting patiently for His arrival.

I could hear the crowd around me. The heavy footsteps of men walking, the beautiful sounds of children running, the echoes from the dancing feet of women all joined to create a rhythm that made my soul want to dance . A smile crept on my lips. Hope at last. He was coming.

By the road I waited. Not in reproachful misery but in joyful anticipation. The sounds changed. The shouts became louder, the singing more joyful and the laughter more contagious. At that moment all I wanted was to catch His attention as He passed by.

With the scores of people it seemed impossible. What could I do to make Him notice?

The new week is about to begin. So many thing on my planner that I need to do. I am worrying about each one day and night. Fretting that I may not get things done on time. But today in church, the sermon was on this scripture,

Can any of you add a single hour to the length of your life by worrying?  (Matt 6:27)

The truth is no one can add a single hour to the length of their life by worrying.

By worrying about mundane things or things we have no control over we inadvertently question the nature of God. To worry means to be anxious which in turn leads to anxiety.

Anxiety can be defined as a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome. It can also be defined as a strong desire or concern to do something or for something to happen.

I know I have been anxious this past week but with the teaching in church today I realized that the nature of God is to love, to care and to bless. In been anxious I was dividing my attention. I was losing focus. I no longer saw where I was coming from which was and is a place of faith. Faith in God. Rather I saw only the obstacles and problems I felt I had in front of me.

When anxiety takes over our lives we loose the power of our faith. Faith begins to wobble, doubt sets in and the next thing is we gradually lose the essence of our being as Christians. So remember as the new week begins, plan, organize but also surrender all to the power of God and just enjoy every second of life. Live for Him and Him alone.

Remain Blessed,
